Located in downtown Toronto CN Tower Toronto, in Canada is one of the highest observation and communication tower in the world. It stands at a height of 553.3 metres and is surpassed only by Burj Khalifa in Dubai as the tallest independent structure on land. It is a signature of Canada and attracts about two million visitors from all over the world. CN refers to Canadian National the name of the railway company that commissioned the project. The CN now stands for Canadian National Tower.The American Society of Civil Engineering considers it as one of the wonders of the world. The idea to build the tallest tower in the Western Hemisphere originated when the Canadian National Railway wanted to built a huge TV and radio communication platform to cater to the Toronto area. It also wanted to demonstrate the strength of the company as a whole. The project was declared official by 1972. Some of the engineers associated with this project were Webb, Zerafa, Menkes, and Housden Architects.
By the 1970’s Toronto was a thriving city with skyscrapers lining the city. The building reflections was a hindrance to clear broadcasting signals. So they came up with the solution of the antenna of the communication center being higher than most of the highrises. The tower was finally opened June 26, 1976. It was estimated to have cost around $63 million. CN Tower Toronto has several structures worth mentioning. There is a hollow pillar with six elevators, stairwells, and a network of power connections. The antenna is based on the top of this structure. Visitors can take a tour throughout the main dech also called the Sky Pod and the Space Deck. Just below the visitors area is a radome which houses the microwave receivers of the tower. The glass door is located at a height of 342 metres. The Horizon Café here is at a level of 346 metres. One of the main attractions of the tower is the 360 Revolving Restaurant. In every 72 minutes it completes a full rotation.
